Coromandel CD to decide today on whether to trigger emergency protocols

The upper North Island is being hit with heavy rain and strong winds, with orange weather warnings in place in Northland, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, and Coromandel Northland has borne the brunt of the weather with Kaikohe recording 200 millimetres of rain in the past 24 hours.

Waipapa resident Monique Edwards says she was feeling anxious last night as loud and heavy rain thumped her home, and her family had a go bag ready.

She says her home was damaged by a falling tree during Cyclone Gabrielle, and she's fearful of more damage.

The atmospheric river has brought high winds and heavy rain to much of the upper North Island with Metservice warning of more to come.

Civil Defence in the Coromandel is keeping an eye on the situation, with more rain expected to fall today.
