The Coroner will this week look into whether a Queenstown man and his step-son are dead or just missing since their 2015 disappearance.
In 2015 John Beckenridge took his 11-year old stepson Mike Zhao-Beckenridge out of school, in breach of a parenting order.
In the following week the pair were spotted around the Catlins area, and then John Beckenridge's car was found in the sea at the bottom of a steep cliff.
Reporter Rachel Graham will be at the coroner's hearing this week.
