Bay of Plenty police have been on alert overnight in Opotiki and Whakatane after reports of shots being fired at a vehicle in Whakatane on Wednesday.
Hundreds of patched gang members who had been in Opotiki for the tangi of Mongrel Mob Barbarians boss Steven Taiatini yesterday travelled to Whakatane on motorbikes and in cars and Utes for the gang bosses' cremation.
The 45-year-old gang president was killed on Friday night and a homicide investigation is underway.
