Independent forecaster, Philip Duncan of WeatherWatch, is warning the rivalry between MetService and NIWA is dangerous and needs sorting out.
The Government is reviewing the relationship amid a forecasting turf war between the two. State Owned Enterprises Minister Duncan Webb says the review will begin in September in a bid to improve how they work together.
MetService is the Government's official forecaster for emergency management while NIWA's focus is climate science.
But Philip Duncan says alarm bells are ringing over NIWA's growing role as a forecaster, especially after it won a key contract with DOC from MetService.
Duncan spoke to Corin Dann.
