Auckland Council has found two Loafers Lodge-type boarding houses bad enough to trigger a dangerous building notice.
It's found almost half of the other 170 providers it inspected have fire safety problems that spurred less drastic but immediate fixes.
Auckland's manager of building inspections Jeff Fahrensohn told our reporter Phil Pennington he's surprised at the high number - and at building owners' ignorance of their obligations.
