The Chief economist at free market think tank the New Zealand Initiative says state spending needs to reduce to pre-Covid levels.
However, he questions whether blanket reductions at public sector agencies will work in all cases.
Nearly 800 jobs are already proposed to be cut under the Government's directive for savings of 6.5 to 7.5 percent.
