1.20 Japanese Breakfast: on permission to feel joy - and to be moody
American Korean musician Japanese Breakfast is back with their fourth studio album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women) — a project that marks a new chapter for Michelle Zauner, both sonically and creatively.
Since the release of Jubilee in 2021, Zauner’s career has soared, not just in music, but also as an author and composer. Her best-selling memoir Crying in H Mart is currently being adapted into a film, she scored the video game Sable, and more recently, contributed a song to Marvel’s Agatha All Along.
Music 101 speaks to Michelle Zauner as she prepares to bring Japanese Breakfast to Aotearoa, playing in Tāmaki Makaurau on June 7 as part of the Auckland Winter Series.

Jula (who prefers not to publicise her surname) is a 24-year-old from Canada, and when her father died a few years ago she inherited his 10,000-piece record collection.
She shares the experience of listening through her father’s collection on her Instagram called ‘soundwavesoffwax’; each day, she picks a record at random, plays it, and gives her thoughts.
Her first video racked up more than 10 million views, and for the past six months she’s been connecting with music lovers all over the world.
