VIDEO PREMIERE: 'Better Days' by Great North

From RNZ Music, 9:49 am on 10 October 2017

Your first chance to see the brand new video featuring the iconic cakes of the Australian Women's Weekly Birthday Cake Cookbook! Great North's new album is out on October 20.

Great North have been around for ten years now and are still doing the hard yards.

Their fourth album The Golden Age is due out on October 20 and it's filled with songs about the often-disappointing life of a working musician.

In particular, they reflect on the loss of friend and occasional band mate, Sam Prebble, who died in 2014.

“Few people have lived the failing musical life more beautifully than he did,” says Great North frontman Hayden Donnell.

The song 'Better Days' is bittersweet and nostalgic. Donnell says it was really tough coming up with a video that suited it.

The answer was cakes. Cakes from the Australian Women's Weekly Children's Birthday Cake Book to be specific. And they blew them up.

"Nearly every 90s child in New Zealand would have had a cake from that cookbook or been at a party where one was served. Every parent will remember making one. I'm so happy to take their precious memories and literally destroy them onscreen in the name of art."

There were a total of 19 cakes made for the video - nine designs and multiples versions of each... for obvious reasons.

The Golden Age departs from the band's alt-country roots and moves into 80s working class rock. Donnell’s songwriting heroes are on display: Jackson Browne, John Hiatt, Gillian Welch, Tom Petty, Paul Kelly, and of course, Bruce Springsteen.

The band, now based in the UK, are preparing to embark on a 20-date European Tour to launch the album.

The Golden Age is out digitally and in stores on CD and LP on 20 October.
