VIDEO PREMIERE: Ebony Lamb - ‘Midnight’ live at Hunters and Collectors

From RNZ Music, 10:00 am on 2 September 2020

RNZ Music is proud to present the new single and live vid from honey-voiced alt-country musician Ebony Lamb. ‘Midnight’ is the first hint of what’s to come on Ebony’s forthcoming solo debut.

Wellington singer songwriter Ebony Lamb has three critically acclaimed studio albums under her belt with her band Eb & Sparrow. She’s toured New Zealand extensively, and is now preparing to take her new material on the road.

She’ll be playing a special run of headline shows, as well as support slots for the wonderful Bic Runga, and continuing guest slots with the Warratahs.

Ebony will be debuting songs from her forthcoming album, which has been two years in the making, alongside Eb & Sparrow classics.

Ebony’s increasingly diverse sound sits somewhere between Nina Simone and Gillian Welch with a glimmering of Catpower. She’s opened for acts including Tami Neilson, Marlon Williams, Beth Orton, and Rodriguez.

Ebony wrote her new song ‘Midnight’ earlier this year, as New Zealand was going into lockdown. The song honours her father, but is also “a real-time complex negotiation” Ebony was having within herself about “the world’s requirement [for us] to be resilient regardless of the situation”.

“‘It is Midnight, all the time now / I can see this way,’  is about seeing ourselves through even when it feels dark, and [knowing] we can, and have done this.

“My father wanted to name me Midnight as a child, it’s a special story but one I’ll save for live shows. It’s the reason my name is Ebony, acknowledging the darkness is so important and a part of seeing light.”

Ebony and her team recorded this special live version of ‘Midnight’ two weeks ago at Wellington vintage shop Hunters and Collectors: “The space lends itself so well to creative imagery and performance,” Ebony says.

“Chrissy, the owner of Hunters and Collectors, has been a long-time supporter of my music over the years, as well as a wide variety of art forms including her gallery upstairs. It’s a Wellington treasure.”
