Charlie Gillett recalled by Toby Laing of Fat Freddys Drop

A champion of 'World Music', BBC radio host Charlie Gillett born 20 February 1942; died 17 March 2010. Gillett was a music lover - he'd only play a song if he liked it, but if he liked it, he might play it in every show he did over the next month! He discovered Dire Straights, managed Kilburn and the High Roads (whose lead singer was Ian Dury) wrote many magazine articles and a respected book about music - 'The Sound of the City: The Rise of Rock and Roll'. With his dentist, He started a record label - Oval Music... Lene Lovich's Lucky Number and Paul Hardcastle's 19 were its hits. But he's best known for his love and support of non-western music - he was one of a group of people who came up with the idea of creating the label "World Music", just so there would be a place to file it in music shops - it worked.
