MetService details latest downpours and thunderstorms

Areas north of Auckland were hit by a sudden torrential downpour this afternoon causing surface flooding and slips. More heavy rain and possibly severe thunderstorms are expected to hit Tairawhiti and Hawke's Bay tomorrow. There are particular concerns for the Esk Valley and Wairoa, with a mandatory evacuation in place for the Esk Valley. Metservice Meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane provides an update.
