A local state of emergency was declared for Christchurch and the neighbouring Selwyn District just after 6pm today.
About 130 firefighters, 25 fire trucks and 12 helicopters have been battling the blaze, though helicopters have now been grounded for the night and will be back at first light.
At 6pm, FENZ reported that the fire was covering around 100 hectares. At 10pm, it was still yet to be brought under control.
To take us through the day's events, Emile Donovan is joined by Selwyn District Council Civil Defence Controller Murray Washington.
