A team of marine scientists have been able to do their most detailed investigation yet, of two seafloor volcanoes in the Kermadec Arc northeast of Bay of Plenty. GNS worked with the US-based Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution which owns the world's most sophisticated remotely operated submarine vehicle, called Sentry - which can do high resolution mapping of the ocean floor going to depths of up to six kilometres.
