Tradie's pie shop caters for smoko

From Nine To Noon, 9:30 am on 10 June 2022

Pie aficionados should put a visit to Cromwell on their winter wishlist now that Sanga's Pies is open for business.

Local tradies were getting underserved in the pie department, says Sang's owner Chris Sangster who works with his brother Rob in construction.

To fill the gap, the Sangsters - along with their ice hockey mate Miro Kollar - opened a local pie shop that's attracting interest from around the country.

Twice a week, the three men drive together to an ice hockey game, Chris tells Kathryn Ryan. Eventually, they got to talking about pies.

"Rob and I are builders and we love a good pie. It's sort of a staple when you're a tradesman. We're sort of pie connoisseurs and we couldn't find a decent pie around."

The Sangster brothers have previously run a mobile pizza kitchen but Miro is the "master" of their special pie recipes, Chris says.

One of the 10 pies crafted at their Chardonnay Street premises is The Duncan - "a bloody good pie" made with homemade curried sausage and named after Chris and Rob's father who passed away a couple of years ago.

The others are:

  • The Southlander - corn beef, mustard and peas
  • Country Classic - chicken, corn and bacon
  • Holey Smoke - steak and cheese
  • Hey Dahl - vegan curry
  • Keep It Deep - seafood
  • Chicken, Cranberry and Thyme
  • Underbelly - pork belly
  • Morning Glory - bacon, egg, kransky and hash brown
  • An as-yet-unnamed prawn and chorizo pie
