Shoring up kaka populations

North Island kākā are at risk and South Island kākā are vulnerable - but there are specialist breeding programmes aimed at boosting the native parrot populations.  

Bruce Vander Lee is the director of Project Janszoon, which is a privately funded trust working to restore ecology of the Abel Tasman National Park at the top of the South Island.

Kākā have gone from being functionally extinct to thriving in two sections of the park.
