Saturday Morning for Saturday 7 April 2018
On Saturday Morning: Kim checks in with Brazilian professor Idelber Avelar about the latest ructions that have left beloved ex-president of Brazil, Lula da Silva, in jail; Miranda Manasiadis on how her cultural heritage lends itself very well to a new version of Icarus, bound for Wellington's Lōemis Festival; Scotsman Alan Taylor on one of his nation's most treasured writers, Muriel Spark; Arthur Tompkins on a new history of plundered artworks; Simon Wilson describes his tumultuous experience of prostate cancer, followed by urologist Andrew Williams, who outlines the nuts and bolts of the condition and its treatment; and finally, Zoe George on how it is possible to create national mourning over a scratched cricket ball while other misbehaviours in sport - particularly toward women - are virtually ignored.
8:09 Idelber Avelar - Lula in jail, Brazil in chaos
Former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil has this week been ordered to turn himself in to serve 12 years in prison over a graft conviction. It's a turn of events that has enraged the country's left and forced them onto the streets, and blown the upcoming general election wide open, with Lula expected to have announced his candidacy soon. Kim will discuss the latest on Brazil with Professor Idelber Avelar, who teaches Latin American fiction, literary theory, and Cultural Studies at Tulane University in Louisiana. Professor Avelar has been a guest lecturer in 15 countries and dozens of US institutions of higher learning, including Yale, Brown, and Princeton.
