David Vann's books - including Caribou Island, Legend of a Suicide, and Goat Mountain have been published in 21 languages.
Vann is a professor at the University of Warwick and honorary professor at the University of Franche-Comte in France - but he calls Aotearoa home.
He says his latest book Bright Air Black is a feminist retelling of the story of Medea, Jason, and the Argonauts.
