Gilberto Gil was one of the biggest draw cards at WOMAD 2024. A global music icon, the Brazilian singer-songwriter and political figure has had a career defined by musical innovation and activism.

In the 1960s, Gil broke boundaries by blending rock, samba, African rhythms, and reggae to create his unique sound. After a period of exile, fleeing Brazil for political reasons, he was eventually welcomed back and went on to become a prominent political figure, serving as Brazil's Minister of Culture from 2003 to 2008.

With countless Grammy Awards for Best World Music Album and millions of records sold, Gil naturally captivated his many New Zealand fans when he appeared at WOMAD Aotearoa.

Listen as Gilberto Gil performs his unique samba rhythms alongside his granddaughter and three sons on the Bowl Stage in Ngāmotu, New Plymouth.

This concert was recorded live by William Saunders and mixed by Darryl Stack for RNZ Music.
