People who were evacuated from medical and dental school buildings in central Dunedin due to a strong smell of gas have been allowed to return.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said seven crews responded to multiple reports of the smell of gas, while police evacuated nearby buildings and businesses as a precaution.
The spokesperson said the people were allowed to return to the buildings on Wednesday afternoon after the source of the smell was identified.
The origin of the smell was pinpointed to a construction site at Dunedin Hospital.
A Police spokesperson said officers helped Fire and Emergency evacuate people from nearby buildings as a precaution.
There were cordons in place on Great King Street and Hanover Street.
Bus company Orbus has warned its drivers are having difficulty accessing the bus hub, on Great King Street near the Octagon, and in some cases were not able to access it at all.
