The board that vets applications for new charter schools says 25 organisations have applied to set up more of the publicly funded private schools.
It said applications for schools to open in 2017 closed today, with a lot of interest coming from educators and community groups representing Māori and Pasifika people.
Ten of the applications were from the Auckland region, 14 were from elsewhere in the North Island, including the Wellington area, and only one was from the South Island.
The board said it would evaluate the proposals over the next two months.
Currently there are nine charter schools, set up after application rounds in 2013 and 2014.
