Air New Zealand is allowing location sharing of Apple's 'Find My' feature to help passengers find lost or missing baggage.
'Find My' is an app that tracks the location of Apple devices. From Thursday, travellers who placed an AirTag or other device - such as an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Apple Watch, or Mac - in their bag can use the app to share a live location link with Air New Zealand's customer service team.
A new option to "Add AirTag location to existing report" would be available within the "Delayed or Damaged Bags" section of the Air NZ app.
Once submitted, this information would be securely shared with the airline's baggage tracing team, who were then able to access a dedicated webpage featuring an interactive map that displays the AirTag's location.
The map updates automatically whenever the AirTag's position changes and includes a timestamp of the most recent update.
Air New Zealand launched its own baggage tracking feature in September 2023.
The airline said it worked closely with Apple to ensure customer data was handled securely. Location sharing would end automatically once a customer was reunited with their bag, could be stopped by the customer at any time, and expired after seven days.
