Stocks on Wall Street fell on Tuesday as fresh doubts arose about European efforts to find a solution to the debt crisis.
The Dow Jones Index was down 145 points, or 1.2%, at 11,769. The Nasdaq Composite was down 50 points, or 1.9%, at 2649.
The FTSE 100 in London fell 0.5%, the DAX in Frankfurt shed 0.20% and the CAC-40 in Paris fell 1.6%.
Across the Tasman, the Australian 200 Index fell 27 points to close at 4228.
The NZX 50 rose 15 points to close at 3296.
At 8.20am on Wednesday, the New Zealand dollar was trading at 79.58 US cents, 76.25 Australian cents, 49.75 pence, 60.45 yen and 0.5722 euro. The Trade Weighted Index was at 69.07.
Brent crude oil was trading at $US112.45 per barrel and gold was trading at $US1696.24 per ounce.
