Stocks on Wall Street have pared earlier losses due to talks between Greece and European officials over terms of a second rescue package stalled.
However, the Dow Jones Index was down 78 points to close at 12,582 on Monday. The Nasdaq Composite was down 12 points at 2806.
In Europe: the FTSE 100 in London was down 1.1%, the DAX in Frankfurt was down 1% and the CAC-40 in Paris was down 1.6%.
The Nikkei in Tokyo was down 48 points at 8793.
The Australian market was down 16 points to 4273 and the NZX 50 rose 13 points to 3307.
At 8.10am on Tuesday, the New Zealand dollar was trading at 82.01 US cents, 77.41 Australian cents, 52.24 pence, 63.51 yen and 0.6247 euro.The Trade Weighted Index was at 72.18.
Brent crude oil was trading at $US110.71 per barrel and gold was trading at $US1730.76 per ounce.
