The New Zealand men's hockey team came through a frustrating opening match at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games to beat Canada 3-1.
Andy Hayward scored from a stroke in the first couple of minutes, while Canada responded after 20 minutes.
A defensively-set Canadian lineup then kept the Black Sticks at bay for the next 40 minutes, with the New Zealanders growing increasingly frustrated.
However Arun Pachia and Phil Burrows grabbed goals in the last 12 minutes to secure the victory.
New Zealand are top of the table with England, who beat Trinidad and Tobago 6-1.
The Black Sticks' next match is against Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday night.
