Legislation enabling the construction of a national war memorial park in Wellington has passed its final reading in Parliament.
The Government has fast-tracked the park, which will incorporate the existing National War Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, so it will be completed in time for the centenary of the Gallipoli landings in 2015.
It is budgeted to cost more than $80 million.
The bill provides the statutory authorisations and consents necessary for the landscaping of the park and the construction of a vehicle tunnel to run under the park where Buckle Street is currently.
