Christchurch youth told the leader of the Labour Party at a public meeting on Saturday that young people may leave the city if opportunities are not created.

About a hundred people attended the Young Labour meeting, which was hosted by the party leader, to discuss the challenges facing youth during the rebuild.

Labour leader David Shearer says the major issues facing youth include affordable housing, unemployment and the future of the university; all of which are compounded by the effects of the earthquake.

He says there has been a decline in the youth population since the earthquake and that the rebuild is not moving fast enough.
