Wednesday's headlines: serial cat killer suspected in South Dunedin; man found guilty of murder road rage stabbing; schoolgirls in van crash in Lewis Pass.

The New Zealand Herald leads with police moves to appeal against a Judge's decision giving a sportswoman permanent name suppression and a discharge without conviction.

The paper says she was caught driving with a breath-alcohol reading twice the legal limit.

Waikato Times

The Waikato Times says residents in the rural area of Tamahere are concerned eight new houses being built will be used for student accommodation.

The single-storey houses have up to nine bedrooms, each with an ensuite. The developer says they are for big families, but Waikato District Council is investigating.

Two staff at a Tokoroa childcare facility have been stood down, while an investigation into claims of mistreatment is carried out.

Dominion Post

The Dominion Post leads with a picture of convicted murderer Shayd Robinson, 21. A jury in the High Court in Wellington on Tuesday night found him guilty of murder, after he stabbed a man to death during a road rage incident.

And a proposed shake-up of workplace safety has been cautiously welcomed by those who've had loved ones killed at work.

Pat O'Shea, whose son was crushed to death by a bulldozer, says any new entity should have the power and capability to bring in strong regulations and enforce them.

The Press

The Press leads with claims from restoration campaigners that as much as $150 million could be shaved off estimates to rebuild the Anglican Cathedral. The Great Christchurch Buildings Trust says it could be restored for about $67 million, compared to Church estimates which say it could take upto 220 million.

A battered and bloodied group of Christchurch High School girls helped each other crawl out the front door of a van after it flipped in the Lewis Pass. Six of the teenagers were flown to Christchuch hospital with serious injuries.

The Otago Daily Times says a Dunedin dairy owner faces prosecution after filling resealable bags with synthetic cannabis. The paper says the dairy owner told police he did not know he could not sell the product in that format.

South Dunedin cat owners are being warned to keep their pets inside, as police investigate fears a serial cat killer is stalking the area.

At least six cats have been found dead in the area, some left hanging from trees.
