One in four secondary schools offering night classes say they will no longer do so, because of Government funding cuts to adult community education.
A national day of action over the weekend brought hundreds of people onto the streets in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch to protest against an 80% funding cut to night classes.
Schools had until Friday to apply to the Tertiary Education Commission for the remaining funding that was available.
The Community Learning Association, which represents the schools, says its own informal survey shows that 25% are pulling out.
Some cities, such as Dunedin, could well be left completely without night classes, says association president Maryke Fordyce.
