Respect for property rights urged in mall rebuild

3:34 pm on 20 July 2013

A businessman involved in the proposed redevelopment of a major Christchurch shopping mall is urging the Government to respect property rights in deciding how the big rebuilding project should proceed.

The development of the Christchurch City Mall has been held up because developers can't win the backing of the 12 separate owners of the 1.5-hectare site.

Six groups want to redevelop the site of the current container mall and they had until last night to supply the Government's Christchurch Central Development Unit with information on their proposals.

The Government has already used its powers to compulsorily acquire land from owners elsewhere in Christchurch.

One development proposal, from leasing agent Brendan Chase, involves the owners retaining their land and becoming part of a planned development.

Mr Chase says the compulsory acquisition of the land would be unjustified.
