Insurer Southern Response says a protest group is complaining about earthquake claims that don't exist.
The group, Southern No Response, took the dispute to the insurer's Christchurch office late last year to demand action on settling their claims.
Co-organiser and city councillor Ali Jones says the company recognised 149 claimants but about 40 homeowners were unaccounted for at Monday's deadline.
Southern Response says 99 claimants were recognised not 149, and it has emails from Ms Jones confirming the smaller figure. It says since the protest, a further 11 claims were added and are being worked on.
Ms Jones she says the group's next move is a meeting for claimants in early February and 250 people have already signed up. It will address insurance questions and include expert technical speakers.
