A jury has found a man guilty of going on a violent crime spree in Auckland targeting Asian tourists. John Koteka denied charges including aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.

The High Court jury in Auckland began deliberations at 11.30am today and returned with its verdicts later in the day.

Jurors found Koteka guilty of threatening tourists with a gun on 17 February last year, demanding cash and guilty of recklessly fired the gun on Mt Eden.

However, Koteka was found not guilty of possessing a firearm and possessing ammunition, which were later found at a property. The jury struggled to reach those two verdicts and had to reach them through a majority decision.

He was also found not guilty of stealing a rental car, but was instead found guilty on an alternative charge of receiving it.

Koteka will be sentenced on 15 October.
