Bright lights seen in the sky over parts of the South Island and Wellington tonight are believed to have been a meteor.
Owen Pearson from Christchurch caught it on film using his dash cam as he was driving north into Springs Junction.

Police say they received calls from people on the West Coast, in Christchurch, Picton and Wellington from about 6.30pm.
Texts coming in to Radio New Zealand described it as a shooting star-like phenomenon with a spark at the end.
Others have described it as very white and bright and like a very large firework.
Police say it is most likely a meteor and don't believe it a flare or fireworks.
