Top military officials from the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand meet here today to discuss the increasing activities in space.
This year's two-day meeting of Combined Space Operations Principals is taking place in Wellington and is hosted by the Defence Force.
Victoria University Centre for Strategic Studies former director Peter Cozens said telecommunications security would be one of the main talking points, while the likes of intercontinental ballistic missiles would also be discussed.
"There's also the issue of security of telecommunications, including things like the internet for example," Mr Cozens said. "But it also means legal conventions to make sure that space doesn't become a battleground."
He said countries want to establish guidelines to avoid armed disputes in space.
