Police in Whakatane are appealing for information after a man was threatened by three men with a shotgun on Tuesday night.

They said a 33-year-old man was stopped in his car at the intersection of Churchill Street and Lord Cobham Avenue by three men wearing bandanas over their faces.

Police said the men threatened the driver and one held a double-barrelled shotgun to his head before they returned to their vehicle and left.

Earlier on Tuesday, shots were fired during a Mongrel Mob funeral procession through the town.

The police were investigating whether the events were linked.
