A Waikato man who allegedly crashed his car while fleeing police, killing a passenger and seriously injuring two others will appear in court today.
The police say they pursued a speeding vehicle that failed to stop for officers in Cambridge at about 6.30pm yesterday. An off-duty officer spotted the vehicle speeding, police said.
Inspector Marcus Lynam said the 34-year-old driver later crashed on Scott Street. There were four people in the car including the driver.
One person died at the scene and two people are in Waikato Hospital - one with critical injuries and another with serious injuries.
The driver is being treated for minor injuries under police guard at hospital.
He will be formally charged and is expected to appear in the Hamilton District Court later today.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority and Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
