A light earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter Scale has hit the lower North Island.
The quake, at 5.17pm, hit about 15km south-east of Lower Hutt at a depth was 18km.
At least 3500 people reported feeling the shake, from as far afield as Auckland, Gisborne and Westport.
