The woman - a tourist aged in her 50s - went for a run about 8.30pm yesterday but failed to return to her accommodation.

Her husband raised the alarm and a search was started about about 10.30pm and continued all night.

A LandSAR team found the woman on a track south of the Blue Lake shortly before 1pm today.

Police said it appeared she took a wrong turn while on a short run, and got lost.

The woman was shaken by the experience but was now being reunited with her husband, said police.

The owner of the Blue Lake Top 10 Holiday Park Sheryl Murray said it was not unusual for people to go off a track and get lost.

"There is one part that is not particularly well signposted."

Ms Murray said the woman had probably gone off a track in what was essentially Whakarewarewa Forest.

She said people had gone missing in the area before and had always been found.

"You get a little bit disorientated but the tracks are great."

There were a huge number of tracks and forestry roads in the area, she said.

"She probably got disorientated as to where she was and maybe should have just stopped and maybe she didn't.

"As long as she has not hurt herself I am sure she will be found."
