A man almost lost his middle finger while collecting paua from a rock on Mayor Island, near Tauranga.

The 20-year-old was diving when a paua he picked up sucked back onto the rock.
When he yanked his finger out it was almost amputated.
He was flown by rescue helicopter to Tauranga Hospital for treatment.
