Police said emergency services were called to the site on Commodore Drive about 8.15am.

They have confirmed that one man has died.

The construction site, which is for a new Rymans retirement village in Lynfield, appears to have been shut down for the day.

Police have cordoned off an area of the site near a concrete truck, where there appears to be a body.

The matter will be referred to WorkSafe NZ and the Coroner.

Ryman Healthcare chief executive Gordon Macleod said the death was devastating.

He said support has been made available to the team who were onsite and they would be working with WorkSafe to find out what went wrong.
