Emergency services were called just after 7am this morning after a man fell 100 metres down a cliff near the popular Vinegar Hill reserve and campsite on the Rangitikei River.

Fire and Emergency said the man had serious injuries and a helicopter was called to winch him out.

In the early hours of Friday, the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter was called out to the same area after a man in his 20s fell 70 metres down the cliff.

It's believed the man had climbed over a fence above the river and slipped and tumbled down the cliff through bush.

He stopped short of plunging into the river.

Rescuers had a hard time trying to find the man in the dark and with the dense bush and trees on the cliff face.

He was eventually winched to safety and flown to Palmerston North Hospital with multiple injuries.

Meanwhile, organisers of the Kiwiburn festival had since put extra security measures in place.

Even though the accidents happened outside the festival site, warning signs and danger tape had been put up, they said in a statement.

The gate security team had also been moved.

Police said they were monitoring the event and had spoken to the organisers.
