Police said a northbound truck and trailer unit collided with a car on the rail overbridge at Ōhau.

One driver is in a critical condition, and has been taken to Palmerston North Hospital.

The road near Manakau was closed in both directions for about three hours while the crash scene was cleared.

The truck involved in the crash was partially hanging over the bridge.

Police said even though the road was open again, motorists should still delay travel to avoid the traffic.

A 50km/h speed limit is in place.
