Wellington's Matariki fireworks display will go ahead this evening with the harbour's whale nowhere to be seen.
The fireworks display was postponed last Saturday to protect the southern right whale.
Wellington acting Mayor Simon Marsh said after charming the city for several days, the whale now appears to have departed so the show can go on.
The council's fireworks display is due to start at 6.30pm to mark the city's Matariki ki Pōneke, or Māori New Year, celebrations.
