Police believe the assault of an elderly widow in Kawakawa last night may be connected to a spate of similar incidents in Northland.
Two women, described as Māori of medium build in their early to mid-twenties, approached the 92-year-old's rural home yesterday evening, saying they were searching for fuel.
The widow, who lives alone, was then assaulted before her home was invaded, searched, and property was taken.
Police said they were aware of other recent occurrences in the area, where two females, described as Māori, have approached residents asking for petrol.
Police said these might be connected to the home invasion incident.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 09 407 9211 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
The 92-year-old has now been discharged from hospital and is being supported by her family.
