10:17 am on 5 December 2019

A prisoner set fire to his high security cell in Christchurch Men's Prison this morning.

Fire and Emergency were called just before 5am and extinguished the blaze in an hour.

The prison's deputy director, Ron Whelan, said the prisoner started the fire by manipulating an electrical socket.

He said the cell was extensively damaged, and the man would likely face charges.

Mr Whelan said all prisoners and staff were safe.
