Four helicopters tackling a fire at Cape Reinga have been stood down for the night.
Fire and Emergency said the fire was now under control, having burned through at least four acres of bush.
Crews are still there and damping down hot spots.
Part of State Highway 1, from the top of Cape Reinga is closed.
Fire and Emergency said crews were called in just after 3pm today.
A Department of Conservation spokesperson said Ngāti Kuri ambassadors had discovered the fire and evacuated visitors from the carpark.
Access to Cape Reinga was closed.
