The east coast of the North Island was rattled by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake, offshore from the Bay of Plenty, last night.
GeoNet says the earthquake wasn't widely felt, but it is the largest to strike New Zealand this year.
It happened at 11.05pm, about 110 kilometres north of Te Araroa and at a depth of 12 kilometres.
Almost 400 people reported feeling it, from Auckland to Hawke's Bay.
