Five platforms are out of service. It's not known how long it will take to fix the problem, and the system is being run manually in the meantime.
Metlink said all Johnsonville services will run to a half hourly timetable, but all services on the Kapiti, Hutt Valley and Melling lines have been cancelled due to the points failure outside Wellington Station.
Metlink is asking commuters to try to maintain social distancing and follow Ministry of Health guidelines on the coronavirus while waiting for services to resume.
A spokesperson said information will be posted on the Metlink website.
