The government is putting $27 million towards replacing the current earthquake prone Naenae Pool and Fitness building. It expects 200 jobs will be created.

The local council is co-funding the project.

The pool has been closed since April 2019 because of earthquake concerns.

Maidstone Sportshub will receive $12m to complete the development of the sports facilities and buildings at Maidstone Park.

It will also establish a "sports hub" to accommodate sporting codes currently at at the park and some currently located elsewhere.

Work on the two projects is expected to begin next year.

The funding is from the government's $3b infrastructure package which it announced at the start of the month and expects to create more than 20,000 jobs across the country.

About 60 projects have been announced to date.
