Firefighters in Otago continue to actively manage two blazes burning in the region's countryside - one near Macraes, south of Oamaru, and the other at Ben Lomond near Queenstown.

Three helicopters and two ground crews are fighting a burn-off which got out of control at Macraes.

It has burnt through 800 hectares of farmland and strong westerly winds have hampered firefighters' efforts.

Crews are now waiting for a cool southerly to help tackle the blaze, and firefighters will return tomorrow morning to dampen down hotspots.

The other fire on Ben Lomond has covered an estimated 800 to a thousand hectares, but is now contained.

Both fires were caused by high country burn-offs.
