Central Otago, Waitaki and Coastal Otago will see an influx of seasonal holidaymakers over the New Year's break, particularly in popular camping spots.

With rain forecast from Friday to Sunday, campers and trampers should consider that waterways, rivers and streams may rise over the coming days, police said in a statement this evening.

"We want people to be prepared before they head out camping so they don't end up becoming trapped by rising waters.

"Make sure you pick a spot that you can easily leave from should waterways begin to rapidly rise.

"Let someone know where you are going and how long for and take appropriate gear, clothing and food.

"We want people to enjoy their summer break with family and friends but we also want you to stay safe."

It is expected to be mostly fine sunny weather for the North Island and unsettled in the South Island over the New Year's holiday period.

MetService says a front and associated low-pressure will bring increased showers over the South Island from tomorrow, putting a dampener on anyone looking forward to being at fireworks displays.

Heavy rain is forecast for the lower South Island and the West Coast, with possible thunderstorms.

MetService says there is a low probability rainfall will reach warning criteria for Canterbury south of Ashburton, Otago and Southland on Friday and Saturday. In eastern parts of Otago, where there is a lower threshold for heavy rain, the probability is seen as high on Saturday.

Meanwhile, much of the North Island is expected to have settled weather, with a few showers expected in the east, and Wellington and Auckland remaining fine.
